LIKE many others, I have read with interest in the Guardian about the BeWILDerwood children’s adventure playground plans for Tatton Park, but I have frankly been getting more and more annoyed by Save Tatton Action Group (STAG), and feel compelled to speak out.

Wherever you go in Knutsford, it isn’t long before you see those ghastly STAG banners that boldly declare that part of Tatton is going to be turned into a theme park.

I’m sorry, but that just isn’t the case and is deliberately misleading, presumably to get emotions running high in a bid to get people to object. This isn’t Alton Towers.

It’s been clearly reported in the Guardian that the proposal is for a children’s adventure park for under 12s with tree houses, zip wires and jungle bridges.

What is the harm in that? Tatton Park is gigantic, with 50 acres of gardens alone. It is hardly going to dwarf the estate.

I agree it was bad that it took a Freedom of Information request to discover that Cheshire East Council could be lending £5 million to the developer, but I feel the council has its heart in the right place (for once!) STAG campaigners say they are trying to save Tatton, but let’s take a moment to consider the last Baron of Tatton, shall we? The eccentric Maurice Egerton left the Tatton estate to the National Trust for the benefit and enjoyment of others.

He was a great supporter of Knutsford’s youth, and founded the Egerton Boys Club to encourage children to get out into the great outdoors. I’m almost sure Lord Egerton would have approved of the plans, so what exactly is STAG trying to save? I, for one, will be bringing my grandchildren to BeWILDerwood if it gets the go ahead.
