AS a local businessman and member of the Town Centre Plan’s working group for the King Street Improvement Scheme, I was extremely dismayed to read Yvonne Bancroft’s election leaflet distributed as part of her campaign as candidate for the Knutsford Town Council by-election.

In it she claims that pedestrianisation is the only way forward for King Street.

In fact, as a result of the working group’s extensive consultation with the people and businesses of Knutsford, people voted by two to one against pedestrianising King Street.

Despite Ms Bancroft appearing to be against improvements due to cost and chaos, 93 per cent of those who took part in the consultation want to see King Street improved.

Working group volunteers put in 18 months of hard work looking at various options for King Street, including full pedestrianisation, before drawing up proposals to put to the people and businesses of the town to get their views.

During the consultation we staged an exhibition, which was a huge success, and featured packed-out presentations.

We took a stall at the Lions fair, set-up a special May Day stall where George Osborne MP looked at the schemes, and held extra presentations for various groups representing all age groups.

Our findings, which represent the people of Knutsford, were adopted by the town council and now form part of the Knutsford Town Strategy.

While it is good to see people standing for election to the town council, they would do well to take on board the results of this extensive research and consultation with the people and the businesses of Knutsford.
