THE proposed plans for the HS2 at a cost of £32 billion are a wicked waste of money. It will benefit business people, travellers from Manchester Airport, politicians, all in a hurry to reach London.

It can in no way benefit the people of Knutsford who will have to travel to Crewe to pick up the train. It will be of no use to all those who want to travel across country or all those in the north east. If the Government is awash with so many billions they should stop closing down hospital wards and departments, put more money into schools so that children are not deprived of music, art, sport. And the devastation to our beautiful countryside would be irreversible.

George Osborne should walk around his constituency and take note of the state of our roads and pavements, which are a disgrace and a danger to car drivers and pedestrians. It is a waste of time and money to patch up a few of the biggest potholes when others will need treatment a few weeks later.
