A MEMBER of Manchester United’s famed Treble-winning squad of 1999 was among those teeing it up at Wilmslow Golf Club recently.

Once again, the club played host to the fourth charity golf day supporting the Bare Necessities charity, which provides toiletries for people in need.

Just under 90 players took part including Wes Brown, who played more than 200 games for United between 1996 and 2011, as the day raised a five-figure sum for the charity.

“We were blessed by good weather at a top-class venue and on the day looked to have raised in the region of £14,000,” organiser Wendy Hobson said.

“I would like to thank Anwyl Homes for their continuing sponsorship, the players, the Wilmslow Golf Club especially Karen and Simon, all of our BN volunteers, all of our donors for their prizes and the auction and the bidders.

“The top team were Anwyl Lancs led by Shaun Sumner with 51 nett ahead of Fore Swingers, led by Andy Wright with the only two ladies in the field, 53, and No Iffs No Putts led by George Hobson, 54.

“It was also good to see the CUGC team of Andrew Henshall, David Durling, Cleve McCurdy and Jonathan Kell putting on a good show.”

Meanwhile, Keith Doyle belied some difficult conditions to take home Alderley Edge Golf Club’s Jubilee Vase, clear of Steve Thomas and Oli Lane.

Club professional Charles le Sueur reported: “There were 55 players who took to the course for the last major of the year and there was some great scoring considering the tricky conditions!

“Congrats to Keith Doyle for winning The Jubilee Vase 2024 with a cracking score of 42 points from Steve Thomas (41) after a cpo (card play-off) with Oli Lane.

“Nearest to the pin winner was Richard Walker, who will be delighted to talk anyone through it.

“Also, a special mention to Adam Gutteridge and James Blackburn for both playing in their first Saturday competition with me.

“They both scored over 30 points, which was brilliant for their first effort!”

Meanwhile, Edge’s ladies played a Stableford that was dominated by Lesley Fowler, whose winning score of 38 was eight clear of nearest challengers Aileen Martin and Janette Smith.

Fiona Anderson (11) was the nine-hole winner from Angela Atkinson (seven).

Over at Styal Golf Club, junior star Luca Davies topped their Wednesday Stableford with 40 points to edge out Lee Davis, who also finished on 40. Chris Hart and Jim Leonard were both four points further back.

Edge ladies played a Stableford and Lesley Fowler was in a league of her own with 38, eight more than Aileen Martin and Janette Smith.

In the Seniors medal competition, David O’Neill (67) led in Division One from Clive Beveridge (69) and Tony Nabarro (71) while Division Two was topped by John Turtle, whose score of 70 was four less than Kevin Bocquet, Graham Jones and Richard Armstead.
