WILMSLOW Hockey Club women’s first team have gone four points clear at the top of Division Two South West after defeating Deeside 2-0 away from home.
Emilie Kelman opened the scoring, intercepting a Deeside back pass and ruthlessly striking home, with this lead doubled by some individual brilliance by Carla Botha.
Playing at home were the women’s seconds, who twice gave up the lead in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Neston, leaving the two sides level on points in second and third place.
Wilmslow men’s first team overcame their poor away record in Yorkshire, defeating Sheffield 2-0.
The Tangerines struck first through David Boddy, who slotted under the keeper and into the bottom corner, before Jack Wright’s 50-yard run from left back ended with him deflecting the ball into the Sheffield net.
Man-of-the-match Sam Dawson led a spirited defence to hold Sheffield out and push Wilmslow up to ninth in the table.
The men’s seconds thumped Didsbury Northern 11-1, while the thirds won 2-1 to maintain top spot in their division.
Alderley Edge’s men’s over 40s reached the quarter finals of their England Hockey cup competition with a 1-0 win at Ben Rhydding.
Captain Matt Hardy finished a well-executed short corner in the second half.
Edge were indebted to strong performances from goalkeeper Simon Pickering and defender Ed Offer.
Against a talented Sheffield Hallam outfit, Edge men’s first team went down 5-0 despite producing some good periods of play in their debut season as semi-professionals.
Billy Hedley won man of the match, as did his under 18s colleague Barney Wright in the second team's 1-1 draw with Didsbury Northern.
Edge women’s first team lost 3-2 against Wakefield, and will need to go all out this weekend against University of Durham if they are to keep their promotion hopes alive.
The women’s seconds defeated Wrexham 1-0 in North Division Two however, setting up a top-of-the-table clash with Wilmslow this weekend.
This victory also proved to be a real ‘family affair’ for the Smiths.
After Wrexham were unable to provide an umpire for the fixture, Karen Smith stepped in as a replacement, joining husband Mark as the second umpire while daughter Katy impressed on the pitch.
The under 16s girls tier one team won their cup pool game against Brooklands 5-3, while the tier two girls and under 14s both lost their fixtures against Bowdon.
The under 18s girls also fell to a narrow 3-2 loss to Repton, who scored a winning penalty corner in the dying seconds.
