RISING theatre star Ashley Hall has landed a top role in one of the greatest musicals of all time.
The 10-year-old from Holmes Chapel will star as Eponine alongside Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates in Les Miserables at the Palace Theatre in Manchester.
Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Les Miserables retells Victor Hugo’s classic story of Jean Valjean, a man who must struggle against the injustices of his past to protect his adopted daughter Cosette and escape the clutches of Javert, the evil prison warden.
The production reaches Manchester as it celebrates 30 years on stage. In that time it has won more than 50 major theatre awards, been performed in more than 40 countries and seen by more than 55 million people.
Mum Kelly, 39, said Ashley secured the prestigious role in the production after attending an open audition in central Manchester.
“There were hundreds of little girls and they told everyone they only needed six for the shows as they only need two at a time,” she said.
“But she got through to the final nine and they then told us via email that she was one of those selected.
“I know I’m her mother but she has got a really sweet voice and is full of confidence.
“Her friends were all saying that they want to do it but they have been very supportive. The problem is, though, that it is sold out – we have got tickets from the management company – but it means other members of the family can’t go.
“The school has been really supportive but she has been having a bit of time off.”
Ashley is limited to three shows a week but will take to the stage 12 or 13 times during the production’s run, which began last night, Tuesday, and will run until February 13.
The youngster has had bit parts in TV dramas including Coronation Street and Clocking Off in the past four years but Kelly said she is hoping to secure further stage roles.
“She has taken it all in her stride,” Kelly added.
“She went down to Cardiff to see the tour there and see Gareth Gates. It was only then that she saw how big it was.
“I think she will have a big shock when she sees the size of the production. She is quite down to earth though, so I hope that continues.”
