MORE than 100 dedicated bridge players battled it out near Knutsford, raising a tidy sum for a local hospice into the bargain.

East Cheshire Hospice’s Knutsford Support Group’s held its Annual Bridge Drive at Mere and Tabley Social Club on Thursday, November 21.

Around 120 players attended the event, which included a gentile afternoon tea with delicious homemade cakes, and a raffle with prizes kindly donated by local businesses.

While is may all seem very civilised, bridge players are a competitive bunch who play to win, according to the contest’s co-organiser and Knutsford Support Group member, Letty Whitehead.

First prize on the day went to Sheila Sach, while the slam prize (for pairs) went to Barbara Grant and Sue Graveley.

In total, the event managed to raise £2,500 for East Cheshire Hospice, based in Macclesfield, which provides care for people suffering from life-limiting illnesses, including in Knutsford.

The hospice’s Knutsford Support Group consists of volunteers Letty Whitehead, Jen Wills, Cherry Hoggard, and Christine Masson, along with other regular contributors who generously give their time when needed.

“A delightful game of bridge was had, and we’re very grateful for everyone’s continued support.”

The event was attended by East Cheshire Hospice’s chief executive officer, Karyn Johnston, who also awarded the prizes.

“We’re so grateful to our dedicated Knutsford Support Group for organising it.

“It costs almost £9,500 per day to keep Hospice services running, so the £2,500 raised will make a big difference.

“It’s reassuring to know every one of those pounds raised doesn’t have to travel very far to help, as it will support our Knutsford Home First Team to deliver care in the homes of people in the town who are facing the end of their lives.”

Karyn took the opportunity to announce East Cheshire Hospice plans to opening a new charity shop on Malt Street, Knutsford, in Spring 2025.

She added: “I hope as many people as possible will support our new Knutsford venture.

“We need more of this vital work to be done as demand grows.”
