UNIQUE pop-up shops are once again giving charities the chance to raise vital funds.

The High Sheriff of Cheshire, Clare Hayward MBE DL opened the Combined Charities Christmas Card Shop at Wilmslow Library.

She was delighted to learn that 100 per cent of their sales go direct to the charities, a distinctive feature of this collaborative effort.

Similar shops at libraries in Knutsford, Macclesfield and Sale have raised more than six million pounds since the venture was launched 53 years ago.

No-one is paid and every penny goes to more than 40 different charities.

Additional proceeds from gifts, toys, and Christmas decorations help cover operational costs and give all the charities an equal bonus.

The High Sheriff said: “I was thrilled to be able to meet you all in your very welcoming charity card shop.

“The work energy and commitment is very impressive. A huge thank you.”

Mrs Heywood met some of the many charity volunteers who are involved with and benefit from the shops.

This included Meadow, a black Labrador, who is currently being trained for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Wilmslow Wells and NW Cancer Research were also introduced to the High Sheriff.

Mrs Heywood bought cards to send out this festive season, along with a few additional Christmas treats.

The Christmas card shops thrive on community support.

Volunteer Jill Dodson said: “Even if you’re only looking to send a few cards, we encourage everyone to visit.

“There’s much more to see and purchase while supporting these wonderful charities that rely on your generosity.

“They are truly a one-stop shop for Christmas cards and festive novelties.”

The Knutsford Christmas Card shop will be open in the library from Thursday, November 7 to Wednesday, December 4.

The Wilmslow shop will remain open until Saturday, December 7.

The initiative was founded in 1971 and is still run by Sheila Hallas MBE and many other volunteers.
