A CRIMSON canopy of hand-made poppies pays tribute to fallen war heroes.

Holmes Chapel Community Yarn Bombers knitted and crotched 3,500 red woollen poppies to adorn an arch around the figures of three soldiers.

The poignant Remembrance Sunday commemoration outside St Luke’s Church won so much acclaim last year, the ladies were invited to mount another display.

Each individual poppy was lovingly created at home by volunteers.

Dedicated crafter Anita Armitt who co-ordinated the team with Nicola Swinnerton, said: “Nine soldiers stand in the church gardens as nine out of 10 soldiers returned from war.

“There is a clock made of poppies with the fingers pointing to 11 O’clock.”

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918.

Anita put the display up with the help of Janet and Chris Jackson, Kris Swinnerton and family.
