A MEMORIAL golf tournament promises to be the “biggest and most successful” yet.
The Norton Barrie Golf Day returns for its 16th year in July at the prestigious Northenden Golf Club.
The annual event is held in memory of Barrie Norton, founder of the designer menswear store in Wilmslow popular with Manchester United legends such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barrie’s son, Blake, now runs the business and has taken on the responsibility of organising the annual golf day, ensuring it remains a fitting tribute to his father.
Blake, 40, said: “Each year, the support we receive is overwhelming. and we are thrilled to see how much it grows.
“The Norton Barrie Golf Day is more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of my father’s life and passions.
“This event not only honours his memory but also raises vital funds for The Christie, where he was treated.
“We look forward to another fantastic day of golf, community, and giving.”
Barrie first established the menswear store in Chorlton in 1969 before relocating to Wilmslow in 1999.
Over the years it has built quite the reputation for itself and has helped dressed stars such as George Best, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.
Barrie died in 2008 following a battle with throat cancer, receiving treatment at The Christie.
The first-ever Norton Barrie Golf Day was held the following year.
Now in its 16th year, the event attracts around 256 golfers and has seen the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Andy Cole, Graham Souness, Frank Stapleton, Max George and Alan Halsall take part.
Anna McIntosh, Corporate Fundraising Manager at The Christie Charity said: “Since 2009, when the first Norton Barrie event took place, more than £175,000 has been raised for The Christie Charity, which is fantastic! This has made a huge difference on all the services at the Christie hospital.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to Blake and everyone who organises the golf events and makes them happen. We hope this one is another huge success.
"This promises to be the biggest and most successful yet in support of The Christie Charity."
This year’s Norton Barrie Golf Day will feature two shotgun starts, at 9.30am and 2.45pm, spreading the teams across the Northenden Golf Club course.
Participants will receive a Norton Barrie goody bag complete with a BOSS polo shirt.
