INSPIRATIONAL Everest hero George Mallory who perished on the world’s tallest mountain has been celebrated in his home village.

A talk entitled ‘Mallory Remembered’ was presented by his biographers Peter and Leni Gillman at St Wilfred’s Church in Mobberley.

More than 160 people attended the event on Thursday.

The Mallory family has a long history of strong links with Mobberley, as George's father and grandfather served as rector there many years ago.

George grew up practising his climbing skills on local buildings.

The audience, made up of local people and climbers, together with members of The George Mallory Foundation, wanted to learn more about the famous climber who perished on Mount Everest on June 8, 1924.

George and his climbing partner Andrew ‘Sandy’ Irvine disappeared on the North East Ridge of Everest.

The pair were last seen alive just 800 vertical feet from the summit.

George was only 37 years of age.

It has long been debated whether one or both of them reached the peak before their deaths, 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to make it to the summit.

The body of Mallory was finally found in 1999, 75 years after he was last seen alive.

Information for the talk was gathered first hand from some of George’s relatives.

Mobberley is also hosting a version of the new stage musical, Mallory and the Mountain, by Ollie Mills.

The daring quest unfolds through flashbacks as George recounts details of his past to friend and fellow climber, Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine each time the pair stop to rest.

The concert will be performed at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 8 at St Wilfrid’s church.

Tickets are available at ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/mobberley/st-wilfrids-church/the-music-of-mallory-and-the-mountain-in-concert.

It is hoped that a statue of George Mallory will be erected in Mobberley, near the church.
