AN XL Bully owner from Knutsford has been fined at court after failing to register his dog before the change of law deadline.
From February 1 this year, it is became illegal to own an XL Bully type dog unless it is registered on the Index of Exempted dogs.
Colin Johnson, of Manchester Road, failed to register his XL Bully type dog Denver before this date.
The 52-year-old contacted Cheshire Police himself on February 9.
A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: "This was brought to our attention on February 9 when Mr Johnson contacted Cheshire Police to inform us he hadn't registered his dog."
Mr Johnson was then summoned to Crewe Magistrates Court on April 4, where he pleaded guilty to owning an XL Bully contrary to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
Taking his admission into account, magistrates fined Mr Johnson £296 and issued a contingent destruction order, which will allow him to apply for a certificate of exemption.
Under the terms of this order, Mr Johnson must microchip and neuter his dog Denver, while holding third party liability insurance at all times.
Denver must also wear a securely-fitted muzzle when out in public and must be securely held on a lead by someone 16 or older.
Mr Johnson must also pay court costs of £120 and a surcharge of £118.
