A SERIOUS illness spurred a woman into finally fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Retired Pat Jones had vowed to lose weight for decades.
It was only when she ended up in hospital that she realised she had to take drastic action to save her life.

“I was in hospital for a week I was so ill,” said Pat, from Knutsford.
“I had a massive infection in my gall bladder, all due to weight.
“A doctor told me I had to change my lifestyle. It did scare me.
“I was determined to lose weight before I was 70. I knew I had to do it.
“All my life I kept setting goals at 30, 40 and 50 and never achieved it.”
With incredible willpower, Pat has transformed her life after shedding more than three and a half stone.
The former office worker is relishing a new love for clothes and make up after shrinking from a size 18 to a petite 10.
“I feel so much better in myself,” said Pat, who is only four foot 10 inches tall.
“I have so much more energy. I go out walking and I’ve joined the leisure centre.
“I used to swim five lengths, now I do 40 and I love aqua aerobics.”
Slimming World helped her to reach her goal.
“Living on my own, I never cooked,” said Pat, who turns 71 this week.
“I was eating rubbish, processed meals, pinging them in the microwave.
“When lockdown came I was eating a block of chocolate every night.
“I used to have fizzy drinks, all full of sugar.”
Now, she has discovered a passion for cooking and meticulously plans and prepares all her meals, using only fresh ingredients.
“I started making soups and casseroles,” said Pat.
“I go to the supermarket and buy all my fruit, vegetables and ingredients.
“It is cheaper to eat healthily. I can make a casserole that will do several meals.”
Pat’s typical meals start every day with a breakfast of organic porridge, crispbread and a banana.
A ham or egg salad and yoghurt makes up lunch, followed by pork or chicken casserole with lots of vegetables for dinner.
“I do enjoy cooking,” said Pat. “I felt like a pudding one day so I made the Slimming World egg custard. It was absolutely delicious, two eggs, milk and nutmeg.
“It did me two nights and couldn’t have cost 50p.
“I don’t deprive myself of anything. It’s just sensible eating.”
Slimming World consultant Vicky Harrison said: “Pat is a shining example of how far discipline, dedication, effort and determination can get you in your journey towards a better, happier and healthier life.
“Since losing weight she feels and looks like a different person.
“Her confidence shines and she glows.
“Pat achieved target after 10 months.
“It has been an inspiration to see her journey unfold.
“She has been amazing and has maintained her weight for the last 15 months.”
Pat added: “I wish I’d done this years ago.
“People I haven’t seen for a long time can’t believe the difference in me.”
Vicky runs the group at Knutsford Sports Club on Wednesdays at 5.15pm.
