I believe we should do everything we can to support our farmers and local businesses and buying British is a huge part of that.
It is something I am passionate about and therefore was delighted the chief executive of Morrisons, Rami Baitiéh, announced a dedicated section on morrisons.com where shoppers can find all British produce available to them.
I, along with other parliamentary colleagues, have been campaigning for this and wrote to all supermarket bosses in the summer urging them to act.
Online grocery shopping is becoming increasingly popular but labelling can be difficult to see online compared to in a store and so we wanted to ensure everyone wanting to buy British could do and this was as easy as possible.
Not only does it end the hassle for shoppers having to search through different items and supports farmers, but buying British creates more jobs and will also create new careers for future generations with creative minds to deliver global solutions for new British industries.
The strength of support for this idea is clear. Since we started campaigning for clearer labelling, more than 27,000 people have signed a petition started by the National Farmer’s Union supporting the Buy British Button.
I know from speaking to my farmers across Tatton how important this issue is and it is something they want to see implemented across all platforms.
I hope other supermarkets will follow the lead of Morrisons and make this simple change to their website.
It will go some way to showing our continued support for our farmers, who work so hard to ensure our food security, and will help celebrate the great produce we produce in this country.
And finally, as Christmas fast approaches and 2023 year draws to a close, let us continue to check in on each other at what is a joyful time for many but for some can be extremely difficult.
One of the first things that struck me after becoming your MP in 2017 was the strength of community spirit in Tatton.
So, may I take this opportunity to wish you all my very best wishes for a happy and peaceful Christmas, and a healthy and successful 2024 and I look forward to seeing many of you over the festive period and in the New Year.
