The family hopes customers will call in to share memories through the decades.
Daniel Belcher, 43, who runs the salon with sister Nic Kay, said: “We are a community barber shop.
“We know our customers so well, we are like one big family.
Daniel’s dad David, 78, who is now retired, and mum Beverley, opened the business in 1978.
“Dad and I worked together for 20 years,” said Daniel, who offered free hair cuts to Ukrainian families last year.
“It is a real barber’s shop, not run on any gimmicks or pretence.
“We do what we do well.
“Customers come to us and feel comfortable. They can talk about anything and relax.”
Daniel received a Special Mayor’s Award last year for delivering outstanding customer service whilst battling challenging personal circumstances.
Daniel said: “I’ve been through my own trials and tribulations.
“I’m a big believer in talking.
“People don’t just want a hair cut they want to share things that are personal to them.
“If you don’t open up to one another and keep emotions bottled in, that’s where trouble festers.
“If we talk, we can overcome challenges. People know I’ve been in a sticky situation and can talk to me.
“We’re proud to share conversations.”
Daniel’s dad, John said right from the early days, the salon has always been a vibrant community hub.
He said: “Every quarter of an hour, we were packed out, six days a week.
“Four of us would do 30 customers each.
“We had the most wonderful clientele. Everyone was smiling and chatting.”
David started his career when he was only 15 at a prestigious London salon, Raymond of Mayfair.
“It was a different world entirely, said David.
“We trained from scratch, it was a long five year apprenticeship.”
Over the years, David was hairdresser to countless stage, screen and singing stars including Shirley Bassey. “I loved my business,” he said.
“You must look after your customers, take care of them and respect them.
“It might sound old-fashioned but that is how we were trained.
“You’ve got to be passionate about everything you do.”
