PROUD villagers have created a seven-foot figure of King Charles ahead of his coronation.

Holmes Chapel Community Yarn Bombers have painstakingly spent hours making the life-size sculpture out of wool.

To celebrate the sovereign’s passion, knowledge and dedication to ecology, they have created a garden, complete with a wheelbarrow, wellies and watering can.

Crafters have even made butterflies, bees and flowers to celebrate the King’s love of nature.

Every item has been lovingly made by at home by knitters and crotcheters.

The imaginative design was unveiled in the garden outside St Luke’s Church on Sunday to much acclaim from the local community.

Team leaders Anita Armitt and Nicola Swinnerton want to thank the 29 ladies who have devoted the past three months to the project.

Ladies split into groups to make the King, purple cloak, white cape, crown, various garden items, lawn and post box topper.

It comes just months after they made a life-size figure of the late Queen to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

“We have got a fantastic group of people willing to commit time to the community,” said Anita, who co-ordinated the project.

“Nothing is too much trouble. Any challenge I ask them to do, they’re willing to give it a go.

“We have so many talented people, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this display.”

The labour of love only began in January.

“This display has been made and put up in record time,” said Anita, who has lived in the village for more than 50 years.

“Making a King and Queen in under 12 months is remarkable.

“The only reason we do it is because it brings us joy and gives us something to focus on.

“It is priceless to put a smile of someone’s face.

“We hope this will bring the community together. Our village is getting larger and people don’t tend to mix the same.

“These sort of events encourage community spirit and a sense of pride in the country we live in.”

The royal collage will take pride of place as the village comes together for a street party to celebrate the coronation on Sunday, May 7.

Villagers are invited to bring their own picnic and chairs for The Big Lunch from 1pm to 3.30pm.

Holmes Chapel Parish Council is providing music, entertainment and tables.
