FLAMES could be seen for miles around as five fire crews battled to save a thatched cottage.
Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform and hose reel jets to fight the roof fire on Pickmere Lane in Tabley.
The alarm was raised shortly before 6pm on Sunday.
All the occupants are safe and stayed in alternative accommodation overnight.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze as crews showered the burning thatch with water.
A fire investigation is now underway to find out the cause.
A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Power was isolated and all occupants were accounted for and had safely left the building.
"Salvage sheets were used within the property to protect the interior."
Neighbours have praised firefighters for their quick response and hard work containing the fire.
One resident watching the drama unfold said: "We want to thank all the crews. They all did a great job. Massive efforts were made by the fire service."
Pickmere Lane was closed whilst emergency crews were at the scene.
