RETAILERS can't wait to see the smiling faces of customers again as Covid restrictions are about to be eased.
From Thursday, people will no longer have to wear face coverings in shops as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepares to lift more pandemic rules.
Shopkeepers across Knutsford say they welcome this move as another step back towards normality.
Staff at Arthur Lee Interiors, the town's oldest family business, have already been overwhelmed with an increase in footfall.
Vicky Wragg, who owns the store with sister Helen Dufton, said: "We have been really busy, there are more people around.
"We're all looking forward to getting back to some form of normal and learning to live a bit.
"When you're wearing a mask all day long, going up and down stairs can be difficult.
"To be able to see someone's face again is a good thing. We will be able to see people's reactions to things and talk more openly.
"We've got a big enough shop for people to spread out."
Peter Murray, owner of Pulse of Perfumery in Princess Street, is preparing to move into bigger premises in the town.
"It is going to be awesome, we can't wait," said Peter, who hopes to launch his new store early next month.
"We are delighted to be investing in the town.
"The removal of masks is great.
"We are blessed in Knutsford with the resilience of our residents and the respect they have for each other.
"Now we've got to move onwards and upwards and keep positive."
Knutsford mayor Stewart Gardiner shares traders' optimism.
Cllr Gardiner said: "I think we need to move on. The future for Knutsford looks rosy.
"I have spoken to a lot of traders and they are hopeful we have turned a corner.
"We need to recognise that the virus will be with us for a little while to come but most of us are perfectly safe.
"We need to learn to enjoy life."
However, he is concerned that the pandemic has left some people, young and old, feeling nervous.
"I would like to see a more positive response dealing with children and adults who are now fearful of the virus," said Cllr Gardiner.
