THE Knutsfordian is of the firm opinion that Knutsford was the place to be this past weekend as Knutsfordians, visitors, tourists, passers-by, saw the town at its best as we celebrated the magnificent 150th Royal Knutsford May Day.
Dressed in his spring finery, The Knutsfordian escorted the fragrant Ms Pole to watch the regal procession make its way around the streets, delightfully free of traffic yet packed with people.
Such good cheer and sheer bonhomie was some recompense for the wrongness of drinking bubbly from plastic glasses on the street as we all cheered the lovely May Queen Jasmine Dines as she was horse-power driven to the crowning on the Heath.
Streets, bars, cafes and restaurants bulged at the seams as revellers enjoyed the sunshine and soaked up the sheer glory of the day. Three cheers for Knutsfordians who have supported this wonderful event for 150 years.
The Knutsfordian raises his plastic glass to the next 150 years. The Knutsfordian duly made his way to the celebrations on the Heath via the temptations of John Collins’ fair.
The Knutsfordian’s decision to watch the ceremonials from the 100ft tall Sky High ride, which promised views of Tatton Park, Jodrell Bank and Manchester Airport, went somewhat awry possibly due to the bubbly or the previous night’s drinks with George on Legh Road.
Drawing a veil over what happened next, The Knutsfordian did have time to ponder the news that the Mistletoe Markets have been unceremoniously scrapped for December 2014.
The Knutsfordian predicted back in March that the sleeping knights had been awoken and would fight for the Heath, Knutsfordians, and for Knutsford businesses.
The Knutsfordian applauds this enormous outbreak of community spirit and trusts it will endure.
PS The Knutsfordian notes Clr Mike Jones, the current leader of Cheshire East Council has been ‘moved’ to issue an apology about his Easter Message, circulated by CEC’s press office by email.
Clr Jones now says: “The words in question were only ever intended to be issued by me personally”, before stating: “I have taken steps to tighten up the processes to ensure that a similar error could not be repeated in the future.”
The leader’s full message, which included an exhortation to vote Tory, not Labour or UKIP can be found on the Knutsford Guardian’s website along with The Knutsfordian’s ‘head in hands’ opinion.
The Knutsfordian does not understand how CEC’s press office could have committed such an enormous mistake in sending out such a ‘personal’ statement through official channels. Will heads roll?
PPS The Knutsfordian finds it somewhat ironic that Tatton Park has been awarded a £76,600 grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help it bid for more money to teach children where their food comes from via the ‘Field to Fork’ programme.
Tatton Park wants to destroy acres of prime arable farmland to build a car park for the BeWILDerwood theme park. The Knutsfordian's head is, yet again, in his hands.
