ARTISAN goods will be available for Knutsford residents on a monthly basis after a deal was struck to bring a unique market to the town.

In October 2012 nearly 100 stalls lined Princess Street, selling everything from Caribbean chocolate to wicker crafts.

It was brought to the town by Denise Valente and Vicky Jackson – in conjunction with Knutsford Town Council – who staged the one-off Michaelmas market.

The pair, who run the award-winning artisan market in Wilmslow and Middlewich, will now be running a market every month in the town – for a six-month trial period – from April 7 after discussions were held with councillors.

The market – again to be held in Princess Street – will take place on the first Sunday of every month.

Denise told the Guardian she believed the Knutsford market could be better than its Wilmslow counterpart.

“The Michaelmas market in October was always a one-off event, and we had 20,000 visitors that day,” she said.

“The town, the residents and the shopkeepers all thought it was an amazing day. We’ve been in discussions with the town council for a number of months in bringing it to the town like what we do in Wilmslow.

“We’ve got the permission to use the road and we’re very excited that it will happen. We think it will be as good if not better than the Wilmslow market.

“We want to bring something to Knutsford that benefits the town in many ways.”

It will cost £150 for the signs and traffic management in terms of the closure of Princess Street, but the council has yet to be told how much a closure notice will set it back.

Clr Tony Dean has been leading the negotiations to bring the market to town.

He said: “The town council wants to build up trade, and events like this can only help.

“The Michaelmas market was successful and we had a lot of positive feedback, which has led to us going with something more regular.

“We’re going to see how the market goes down and see if there is any adverse affect on the town.

“I think it’s going to be great for Knutsford – it’s a market town and events like this will only help.”
