Shameful silence

FOR our local Anglican leaders to refuse to comment on the recent remarks made by the Archbishop of Canterbury about adopting aspects of Sharia law is another sign of the timid' leadership we now have in many areas of the Church that represents the majority' or our country.

Dr Williams may have already apologised for his unclarity' but not for what he said.

It is simply unacceptable for the head of this country's established church to say, in effect, that if Muslims refuse to adhere to British values, then Britain will have to become a bit Muslim.

His remarks will already have emboldened British Islamic radicals and recruited more to their cause.

Willingness to accommodate Sharia law is evidence that British society is now terminally weakened and is theirs for the taking.

His remarks will have a devastating effect on Christians in the Third World.

Don't forget Dr Williams is the head of the church whose members in countries such as Sudan, Nigeria, Pakistan and elsewhere, are being persecuted, harassed, attacked, forcibly convicted and murdered in large numbers at the hands of the enforcers of Sharia law.

By proposing to entrench Sharia law into Britain, he has both betrayed his besieged flock worldwide and weakened Britain against the danger that it faces from Islamic extremists who threaten Christians around the world.

It was shameful and a disgrace that the General Synod rose to its feet to applaud when it gave Dr Williams a standing ovation.

I wonder how much Mrs Phillips actually knows about Sharia law? The parts of it which the Archbishop was suggesting should be allowed are those concerning marriage, inheritence etc. It would take an idiot to think he meant the amputation of limbs!
Jews have their own civil courts, Catholics follow the church's rulings on abortion, divorce etc which are at odds with the state laws, but does anyone object to that?
It all needs to be put into proper perspective. I read about murder, rape, mugging of old ladies, drugs and alochol out of control in the UK and wonder why? Something is wrong with our society - can we really preach at others?
I live in a Christian community within a Moslem majority and Christians have full freedom to practice their religion and follow their customs. Islam needs a massive PR drive in the UK in order to remove the element of fear of the unknown.

Mrs Phillips is exactly right with what she says. This country, England, needs some real backbone and a end to the constant Muslim mollycoddling. I have lived in the Middle East for 18 years, and whilst they are extremely tolerant of Christianity, we, as expacts, are very respectful of the surroundings we are in. If we, as expats, are unhappy, we simply return to our own countries. The prime word being 'guest'!
