Plea for better trains, please

IT WAS interesting to hear someone from the Association of Train Operating Companies on Radio Four this week saying how the January fare increases were justified as stations and services are getting better and faster and new trains are being brought in to operation.

So where's Knutsford station's improvements and why are 1985 Pacer trains (which were built on a limited budget for short journeys) being used on a route which is around 90 minutes in 2008?

Personally I've not been all that impressed with some of the new trains that have been brought into operation in the area.

London Midland, which serves Hartford and Crewe, and Transpennine Express, which serves Warrington, Manchester and Stockport, have both recently acquired new trains built by Siemens.

The seating in standard class is hardly suitable for journeys as long as Liverpool to London and Manchester Airport to Edinburgh, which are the among the routes that the new trains are used on.

I use this service from Manchester to Knutsford daily. Unfortunately I have to catch the train from Manchester which arrives into Knutsford at 8.20. It's just generally an old 2 carriage Pacer. The problem I have with this is not so much the train but the horrible children who get on in Altrincham/Hale and attend Knutsford High School. No wonder Northern do not wish to replace these old trains with newer models with the abuse these trains suffer, let alone the abuse the other passengers suffer at the hands of these nasty, ill mannered, dirty "children". Knutsford High, you should be ashamed of what you are creating!!! I'm sure spitting and swearing aren't on your curriculum, and that's just the girls......

My daughter has recently married and is living in Knutsford. Her husband's daily travel to Manchester is so bad that they are thinking of moving. The trains in the morning are always late and are sometimes cancelled all together. Parking in Manchester is so expensive that driving is not a reasonable option. I come from a long line of Knutsfordians and will be very sad if they have to move simply because of the unreliable train service.

Great example this morning of this terrible train service.....

The 7.39 from Manchester Piccadilly to Knutsford was announced as running 28 minutes late, then 36 minutes late, then 42 minutes late, then 50 minutes late....then surprise suprise it was cancelled. Then the next service was ten minutes late. I actually felt sorry for the nasty little children who got on the train this morning (Altrincham/Hale) as most of them had to stand and they were at least ten minutes late for school (they were probably quite happy though). It's bad enough meesing cattle sorry communters about without making kids late for school (when they need all the education they can get)! Northern's excuse for this mess this morning.......err they couldn't be bothered giving one.

£10.20 well spent?

The 7:39 from Manchester shouldn't be scheduled to be a 142 Pacer train as it is a 06:09 Blackpool to Chester service arriving at 9:08 (definetly not a local journey, whether Manchester to Chester is local is debateable.)

Not using a Sprinter train means there are only three doors which makes it practically impossible for people to get off the train when the school children are trying to board.
