COUNCILLOR Bert Grange is fully justified in his chastisement of the planning authority at Macclesfield in failing to foresee and prevent the sticky end of King George's inn sign. Knutsford Town Council will also have had the opportunity to comment on the relevant planning application.

What were they thinking of?

It is unlike Macclesfield's planning committee not to be keenly alert on what they see as essential heritage matters.

Likewise, it is deplorable that it has been considered necessary to cut back the hours when Tatton Old Hall is open to the public.

Visitors to Tatton do not have time to see all its attractions in one visit.

Naturally, the mansion comes top of visitors' must see' list and, on leaving there and looking for a second one, the nearest is the Home Farm, which is only a short walk away.

Visiting the Old Hall would involve them in a long walk or retrieving their car, which is a bit of a nuisance.

There is general concern at this reduction of public access, which could, possibly, be obviated by the provision of a minibus service - as happens at other heritage properties - such as Shugborough - where the attractions are some distance apart.
